A new study has concluded that a "chasm of misunderstanding" exists between news organizations and religious leaders in the United States, resulting in reporting that is often inadequate. But the study said that those shortcomings were due more to ignorance and lack of resources than, as frequently maintained, to anti-religious bias among journalists.

Apple Computer Inc. announced three new multimedia kits for personal computers, including the first for non-Apple PC's. The stock price of Gold Standard Inc. nearly tripled yesterday after a jury awarded $404 million last week in a long-running dispute with Texaco Inc. Gold Standard shares closed at $3.375 yesterday, up $2.063, in Nasdaq trading. The award by a Utah state court jury stems from a 1973 dispute with the Getty Oil Company over a mining agreement involving a gold mine near Salt Lake City. Texaco acquired Getty in 1984. The judge overseeing the case has not yet entered the verdict, and Texaco says it intends to challenge the verdict and may appeal the ruling. Texaco shares fell 50 cents, to $65.125. A Gold Standard spokesman said the jury award, if upheld, would be a windfall for the company, which has been in the development phase and has not reported revenue for 20 years.

Over the Labor Day weekend, the 105 branches and 84 automated teller machines of National Community Banks Inc. of West Paterson, N.J., were converted to the control of the Bank of New York Company. Bank of New York, the nation's 16th-largest banking company, said the assimilation was the largest ever to take place in such a short time. Bank of New York formally acquired National Community Banks for $589 million on Aug. 11.

PPG Industries has closed a commercial glass plant in Ford City, Pa., that opened in 1888 and employed generations of families. PPG officially closed the plant on Labor Day, putting 325 employees -- most of them members of the Aluminum, Brick and Glass Workers International Union who went on strike on May 14 -- out of work.

The United States Export-Import Bank has agreed to provide up to $4.8 billion in financing if the Saudi Arabian national airline purchases new jets from the McDonnell Douglas Corporation. The loan guarantees set the stage for the company to compete with the Boeing Company for the sale. Last month, the bank said it would provide Saudia, the country's national airline, guarantees of $6.2 billion if it chose to buy Boeing aircraft.

Oil prices fell to a three-year low yesterday after the International Energy Agency lowered its forecast for world oil demand by 300,000 barrels a day, while OPEC's oil production continued to grow. Output from the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries rose another 100,000 barrels a day in August, to 24.7 million. OPEC is still a million barrels a day over its third-quarter target and had hoped for stronger demand in the fourth quarter to push up flagging prices.
