LEAD: The Gerber Products Company said it would take an after-tax charge of $8.3 million, or 22 cents a share, against its fourth-quarter income to consolidate its Gerber Childrenswear business. The move will eliminate certain ''nonstrategic product lines and reduction of excess manufacturing capacity,'' the company said.

Chase offered to sell new shares at a discounted price in October 1989 to rebuild its equity capital after taking special losses from its loans to developing countries.

LEAD: The Archer-Daniels-Midland Company, the giant grain company based in Decatur, Ill., has acquired 6.7 percent of the International Multifoods Corporation. In a Securities and Exchange Commission filing, Archer-Daniels-Midland said it had acquired the shares of the Minneapolis-based company for investment purposes.

LEAD: A Massachusetts technology company introduced what it said was the first commercially viable ''typewriter'' that operates by human speech instead of touch. Dragon Systems Inc. in Newton said its Dragon Dictate had a basic vocabulary of 30,000 words, with an 80,000-word dictionary built in as a backup, and could print out more than 40 words a minute when operated by an experienced user.

LEAD: The Coca-Cola Company's profit margins widened last year in every region of the world except the home base in the United States, the company said in a report to shareholders. Coke's operating profits as a percentage of sales in the slow-growing American market eased to 11.6 percent in 1989, from 11.8 percent the previous year, the report said.

LEAD: The entertainment company Really Useful Group P.L.C. said the Australian financier Robert Holmes a Court had bought a 4.18 percent stake, threatening the plan of the British composer Andrew Lloyd Webber to take the company private. Mr. Lloyd Webber is offering 233 pence, or $3.75, a share, for the stock.
