NEWPORT, April 17 -- Newport will have a somewhat earlier season than usual largely because of the recent floods in France and the tendency to come to Newport earlier hereafter than has been the custom for five years or more.

Although it has not been officially announced it is likely that Anton Wittek will be the choice for concert master of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, succeeding Willy Hess, who is to go to Berlin. Mr. Wittek is at present concert master of the Berlin Philharmonic.

"One of the most cheering items of news that has come recently to the residents of the Borough of Queens," said J.C. McKnight of the McKnight Realty Company yesterday, "was the announcement made by Mayor Gaynor last week that he was taking a personal interest in bringing about the operation of the Belmont tunnel from Times Square to Long Island City.
